Psychotherapy, Spirit and the Womb
Why the Feminine is Inherent to the Process of Psychological Healing
A few weeks ago, I posted about the problematic working conditions experienced by many mental health professionals and those in “helping professions” (nurses, teachers, etc.). My main argument was that these professions inherently embody a more feminine or relational approach to healing, emphasizing feminine skills such as empathy, nurturance, and acceptance versus more masculine skills, which would include things such as status, achievement, power, and competition (AKA: the “finance bro” mentality).
And while I don’t mean to shit on the men of the world, I do think it is essential to discuss why it is that these more “feminine” fields on not seen as inherently valuable especially since the very process of psychotherapy itself is rooted in feminine forms of healing, which specifically white men have co-opted for close to 200 years.
So here is a little history lesson on how the practice of psychotherapy can be traced back to the feminine healing practices of our female ancestors.
