The Emperor
Understanding the Importance of the Divine Masculine in Tarot
The fifth card in the Major Arcana, (though it is associated with the number 4) The Emperor naturally evokes a sense of stability, structure, and authority. The famous psychotherapist Carl Jung believed that the number 4 represents stability and actualization. Therefore, he would probably not be shocked that Emperor would also have this connotation.
Moreover, this card typically represents the “father” or “ruler/King” archetype from a depth psychotherapy perspective. Therefore, it reinforces what we would often consider to be patriarchal representations of power or masculine symbols of leadership and “ego” strength.
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you would know that as the self-proclaimed “Dark Fairy Godmother,” I typically write about the ways in which patriarchal institutions have historically oppressed the feminine. Specifically through the concept of the Madonna-Whore complex and the demonization of the “dark feminine.” Which is innate to the process of healing from both a spiritual and psychological perspective.
However, at the risk of sounding like I am switching teams, I believe it is important to discuss the role of the masculine from a psychological perspective and how we can use the Tarot card of the Emperor to reconcile our relationship with our own “inner man” regardless of how we identify in terms of our gender expression.
